Well, living in the Downtown neighborhood of the "313" is definitely an adventure. Now that summer is here the city is alive with activity. Not that it's a dead zone in the winter, but there is only so much happening anywhere when it's bitter cold and snowy. Last weekend was an especially great time to be a Downtown Detroiter. How cool was it that the City was able to secure the Red Bull Air Race? I don't think most people know how big of a coup that was. The Red Bull Air Race only came to two cities in America the fabulous city of San Diego and Detroit. What does that tell you about the great possibilities of our fabulous city? The Air Race also went to cities like London, Stockholm, Budapest and several other equally incredible places. To be among the likes of those cities that should make any Detroiter proud. But, to be a Downtown Detroiter and have the opportunity to step out of my front door and walk to the Riverfront and be among tens of thousands of people enjoying the great weather, food and festivities was just incredible. As I walked back home after the Race I couldn't help but think that this weekend was the start of what will be a really great summer in The D! By the way, the Air Race will be televised soon and seen by Millions across the globe now that's some great exposure for Detroit.
Even though the weekend was exhausting, tonight will be another great time to be a Downtown resident. There are so many great sports bars in my neighborhood and I know that if the Red Wings pull off a victory tonight the celebration at any of these will be huge! So, even though it's a work night how can I possibly stay in? I suppose the only big dilemma is where to go??? Hockeytown sounds like the natural choice, but the Detroit Beer Company is around the corner and has great food, spirits and service too. Plus, there is a new sports bar on Gratiot not far from Greektown. Then there are the sports bars near The Joe, Comerica Park and Ford Field not to mention a spattering of others around Downtown. My only hope is that the Wings do pull off a victory so I can have the rest of the week to relax before the weekend gears up again.
Next up for this Downtown Lady: I must be Superwoman because I swear I will be fitting all of this into my weekend
First, on Friday night I'll be checking out a fashion show at a funky little spot Downtown on Broadway - the exclusive new line from local brand "Word Play T's" will be highlighted.
Then on Saturday, I'll be heading out to the Annual Detroit Festival of the Arts at the Wayne State University Cultural Center to check out the art vendors, food and entertainment.
On Sunday I need to make my way over to Pewabic Pottery on Jefferson Street for the 18th Annual Spring Show and Sale. Plus, I plan on checking out the (free) Second Annual International Detroit Black Expo at Cobo with lots of cool shopping, activities, speakers and more - for all races! AND hardly a weekend goes by Downtown where there isn't a special affair to attend. It's time to get "glammed up" once again because John Sally is capping off the weekend of festivities for the Detroit Black Expo with a VIP Affair at the Motor City Casino Hotel on Sunday night. What fly girl doesn't love the chance to get dressed up especially right after seeing Sex and the City!!
Why choose between all of these things? With determination and a couple Red Bulls, I'll make every single one of these exciting events happening this weekend in Detroit!
