CELEBRATE THE SEASON OF FUN

Summer 2008

Like an unopened box of sidewalk chalk, the possibilities for fun at the BBAC this summer are endless.  With workshops in fashion design or how to create the next concept model car and a new teen camp, the BBAC campus will be awash with creative activities for teens.

Summer 2008 at the BBAC is full of fresh features including new instructors, intriguing topics and a number of one-time workshops to accommodate busy schedules and those of us who can't make long commitments in the summer.

On the other side of the spectrum, for those who are looking to sharpen the skills or gain an edge in the competitive worlds of fashion design or art school entry, there are also intensive workshops.

View the summer program book online at BBArtCenter.org or phone (248) 644-0866 to get one in the mail.  Registration is underway by phone, in person, by mail, or fax.   The BBAC is located at 1516 S. Cranbrook, Birmingham, MI 48009 between 14 and 15 Mile Roads.  Fees vary for BBAC members and guests. There is often a materials fee as well.

There are two two-week sessions for the popular Youth Art Camps July 14-25 and July 28-August 8. Children work within age appropriate groups of students in grades 1-2, 3-5, and middle school. In addition, hands-on art activities, games, entertainment and presentations serve to introduce children to different cultures and forms of art.

Teen Art Camps are new for 2008. Two one-week sessions include small classes of all skill levels taught by professional instructors. Every day includes a lunch break presentation by guest artists and professionals speaking on art history, careers in art, colleges and portfolio preparation. Session One," Traditional Processes", runs June 23-27; Session Two, "Exploratory Arts", is August 11-15.

Teen workshops of note are Imagination on Parade where teens create sculptures inspired from a favorite cartoon character. Techniques are those utilized in the Thanksgiving parade floats and include Styrofoam carving. The workshop is taught be a professional stone carver who has worked for The Parade Company. Design Concepts: Hot Wheels encourages student imagination to "drive" creation of a new concept model car from its foundation to drawing it in perspective and including the actual processes used to create classic collectibles.

There are also workshops for the serious art student including The Intensive Portfolio Preparation, which is for every student looking to apply to art school.  Conceptual skills are emphasized to encourage students to think outside the box as they develop their college portfolio. Instruction is individualized and includes insight into applying to art schools and how to properly present one's work.

Other "fashionable" workshops for teens include Fashion Design: the Accessory where they make a small project, like a hand-sewn clutch purse, plus a trend board, and a drawing of an outfit with the matching accessory.  There is also Intro to Interior Design which includes the basic concepts of color, materials and space planning.

Fashion lovers of all ages can pursue the Fashion Studies Series featuring Anatomy of the Figure; Fashion Rendering; The Quick Sketch; Ink and Watercolor for Fashion Illustrator; Studio Drawing for Fashion Illustration and Fashion Illustration & Textile Rendering.

The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center is a regional non-profit art center committed to promoting the visual arts with classes for all ages and levels. Each year the BBAC offers 500 classes for 4,000 students including year round classes and art camps. The BBAC campus features nine classroom studios, four galleries with free exhibits open to the public, art camps, special events, and a retail gallery shop.
